Even though they both speak English, there has been some differing of word meanings, which have come to their attention. They enjoy the opportunity of being outside more due to more area to roam. Peter described England as more densely populated, and Janet stated the need to always carry an umbrella with you. Peter enjoys skiing; shooting and hunting with friends and both spend more social time with friends during the week. In England, social gatherings typically occur during the weekends and may involve traveling to a destination, but here they have found that meeting with friends during the week is very common. They both miss the ability to drop in for tea with friends. 'Afternoon Tea' is a tradition and includes having sandwiches and cakes with your guests. Adjustments for Peter and Janet have been 'driving on the wrong side of the road', which 'can make you feel very vulnerable'; sudden changes in temperature, 'when it drops dramatically that is very different from England or Australia'; and people being surprised to hear a British accent and stop paying attention to what we are actually saying. Peter shared the significance of Guy Fawkes Day, which is celebrated on Nov. 5th. In 1605 Guy Fawkes attempted to blow up Parliament and was captured and later executed. The British celebrate this day by having bonfires and fireworks and burn an effigy of Guy Fawkes. Boxing Day is celebrated on Dec.26th , the name refers to the tradition of giving boxes of goods to the poor and needy. This day is also the biggest sporting day of the year and families play sports, hunt, or go to the races. In England, holidays are a time of large family gatherings with importance on the traditions associated with each event. Janet describes Americans and Australians as having similar lifestyles of being laid back and relaxed, and spending time outdoors. Australians celebrate their own National Day on Jan. 26th with family gatherings and more within their own communities rather than nationally. Peter and Janet encourage you to visit their home countries and make the effort to get out and explore and meet the people and see things. "The people there are friendly and welcoming." |
